As I reflect over this past year, looking at photos from our first opening in 09', it's hard to believe how far we have come in 3 years. We've made many new friends and appreciate each and every one of you! Opening a second location this past August with it's own little niche was probably one of the most memorable events for The Attic Girls!

are not the cookie cutter ones found at the big box..they are the ones from Christmas past. Here's a peek at some favorites in the shop now. The beautifully painted, unusually shaped, the ones you remember on your childhood tree. We have been saving them for awhile now, and they are available in sets and singles.
Pink! Always a favorite and paired with silver and aqua makes it even better.
These bright orange and yellow striped ornaments are great and I've not seen this combination before!
These clear ornaments are so unique. Hand painted in assorted shapes..very cool!
These are special ones with Christmas messages. The purple one is a first for me...never seen one until this year. Must be a rarity. These ornaments are just a tiny sampling of our offerings! Stop by both locations to see them all.

This vintage inspired New York subway wall hanging has such a great look. It's made of fabric that's printed with New York subway stops. It's attached to wooden dowels, with a jute cord for hanging. Fantastic for home or restaurant decor! Measures 19" wide and 60" long.

An antique wicker buggy and an old child's sled take the stage. The little antique mohair dog was a last minute addition that gave us a much needed laugh after a long night decorating. :)
The doggie in the window isn't available anymore..he's going to be under someone's tree!

Our little tree is filled with homemade hand knit covered ornaments in 3 styles, and mittens.

Celebrating 3 Years & A Grand Opening

The Attic turned 3 today!

Our original plan was to celebrate our 3rd anniversary at Tenth Street and the Grand Opening of our second location on Orange this month, but we had a slight delay..We have been working on plans and permits with the city for a new awning and signage...these things take more time than we anticipated, and we really want the shop to be in tippy-top shape for the big event! It will be worth the wait, we promise!

Stay tuned..we'll announce the Party Date soon! Hopefully sometime in November. :)

The cloche hat is my absolute favorite style of hats. These hats were very popular during the 1920s-30's, and I'm glad to see they have made a comeback over the last few years. These wool cloches will keep your noggin warm this winter.

We just received our first order of these slouchy beanies and they are almost gone! We should be receiving more soon, but for now, we have charcoal, olive and black. All the cool cats wear these!

It all began with this little owl cap for babes. We noticed more and more OLDER kids trying to squeeze this onto their noggins..(actually quite funny to watch) Since the company does not offer this in a larger size, I went on the hunt for someone who did! School Days

Our first week at the new shop went by in a flash! I guess that means we are having too much fun. :) We've been super busy and have already changed the window display this weekend! It's back to school at The Attic. Come on by.. we just received some new arrivals in hats and scarves, some fun vintage books, a vintage child's rolltop desk, school chair and even a teacher wearing her red plaid cape. Vintage flash cards line the floor. We have 3 full boxes of vintage flash cards.

Our beautiful blue birdcage, which was the centerpiece of our first window display has found a new home. Goodbye first window display...you were beautiful while you lasted.

It was rusty..it was crusty, but now it's dreamy with just a hint of it's old coat. He worked on it a few hours for 2 evenings. And I thought all it would take was a wire brush! lol..silly me.

With key in hand and plans twirling in our heads, we'll be busy busy busy over the next few weeks as we prepare to open up our second location on Orange Ave...just around the corner from our shop on Tenth St. Most of you are probably unaware that The Attic was operating out of this very location for 10 years before it was sold in 2007. It's been a dream of ours to be back and now it's becoming reality.

You won't see as many updates here, but I promise to show you a few snaps along the way as shop #2 takes form. Painting begins this week, designing the layout of the shop has only been in my head for weeks, but it's beginning to take shape on paper. We've ordered some fun new merchandise and we can't wait to show you! When you ask? We have no set date, but I will post it here on the blog and facebook just as soon as we know. Stay tuned kiddos!

Vintage Wardrobe Luggage

Wardrobe trunks and suitcases such as this were made in the early 1920's-30's, and most had drawers on one side and hangers with rods on the other. This one has compartments but not any drawers. The old luggage weighs a ton when empty. I don't know how they ever managed when it was filled with clothing and shoes! This one was definitely used a lot as it is missing some of the leather trim. They make great extra storage boxes, and you can stack 3 or 4 to make a bedside table.

Oh, are the wheels ever turning on how to use this piece in the shop. I see this with scarves on the hangers and rolling others inside the different compartments.

When Michelle and Mary Kate stopped by yesterday, they enjoyed flipping through the pages of this 1950's marriage manual! We had some good laughs. This book has everything for the engaged couple to prepare for their big day. As they were looking at the wedding ring prices, Michelle spotted one that looked just like hers! The price back then? A whopping $210.

Treasures From The Sea

These aqua and natural gray starfish are my favorite new arrivals this week. We have Bahama sea fans that range from natural brown and purple, to washed blue. The wood boat pictured is our last one, but more are on the way.

These seashell flowers look great in old bottles filled with sand.
We have them in teal, purple and coral.

Beautiful large abalones, polished on both sides...also new this week.

These little "cookies" are off the chart on the cuteness scale!

Driftwood is wood that has been washed onto a shore or beach of a sea or river by the action of winds, tides, waves or man. It is a form of marine debris or tidewrack.

In some waterfront areas, driftwood is a major nuisance. However, the driftwood provides shelter and food for birds, fish and other aquatic species as it floats in the ocean. Gribbles, shipworms and bacteria decompose the wood and gradually turn it into nutrients that are reintroduced to the food web. Sometimes, the partially decomposed wood washes ashore, where it also shelters birds, plants, and other species. Driftwood can become the foundation for sand dunes.

Most driftwood is the remains of trees, in whole or part, that have been washed into the ocean, due to flooding, high winds, or other natural occurrences, or as the result of logging. Every little girls dream... a child's hutch. I would have loved having this in my playhouse! I've seen a lot of little play cabinets over the years, but never one with glass doors, so I'd say this is a rarity.

Architectural Salvage in San Diego is one of my favorite haunts, and if you've never been to this goldmine, I highly recommend a trip there. It is filled from floor to ceiling with the most incredible salvaged items you could ever want. There truly is something for everyone! We always enjoy our visits to this treasure trove... Enrique is always so friendly and very helpful. Just take a peek at what they have to offer.

Salvaged windows, doors, lighting, hardware, mantels, columns and so much more!

It has all the original wavy glass. A real beauty!

The old doorknobs with worn paint from years gone by. They just don't make them like they used to. Look at the detail in the metal.

What an unusual piece this was!

Our picks for the day were a collection of old buoys with perfectly worn paint,
and a very cool little column that will make a sweet stand for key rings or jewelry. There were so many things I wanted...but I was good. :)

Repurposed Jewelry Displays

Vintage frames make great jewelry boards

Our newest frame was hung last week and it measures 4 feet wide!
Jane did a great job putting it together for us.

I found a pair of these vintage tole stands earlier this year. Sadly, the previous owner removed all of the old glass flowers, but now their graceful arms are filled with earring cards.

Always fun to use the unexpected when it comes to displaying our jewelry.

We usually hang a few necklaces on our statues.

Scales also make great necklace or headband displays.

This wonderful old buffet came in this week and we had to feature it front and center. We debated on painting it, but in the end, we left it. If someone decides that they want it painted, we can do that! What a great piece for a flat screen, or use it as a buffet.

Table - Sold
This gorgeous side table has beautiful lines and we left the bottom natural, but the top had to be painted. We chose black and we love the contrast!

This is something we rarely come across- a turn of the century Bamboo etagere. It's amazing and if I had a spot in my bath, I would have loved this for towels and such. For now, it displays our hats perfectly! Wouldn't this be awesome display coral and other large seashells?

When Carolyn came up to the counter to tell me how she found our shop, I could hardly believe what I was hearing! She started out by telling me that she came all the way from Connecticut to buy a pair of starfish earrings...I must have appeared confused because she then laughed and told me the REAL story. She was en route from CT to San Diego when she admired a pair of starfish earrings that the flight attendant was wearing. When she asked her where she got them, she was told "they came from a little shop in Coronado called The Attic." I still can't believe it! So once she settled into San Diego, Carolyn made her way over to our shop. So I would say this is definitely a first. A referral to our shop at an altitude of 36,000 feet!

is leaving on a jet plane today!

Wendy stopped by to do a little shopping yesterday before heading back to MN., and she was kind enough to pose for a quick pic with one of her new found treasures. This pillow is going to make a great Father's Day gift for her husband, as Old Ironsides is a favorite poem of his. This was the nickname given to the 18th century frigate, USS Constitution during the War of 1812. This was a one of a kind pillow that we constructed using a vintage stitchery framed out with new fabric. It was great seeing Wendy again after making the move East, and we hope she can visit us again when in town!

Repurposed Picture Frame

I picked up this antique picture frame without glass last week with the hope that it would make a great little earring display. Jane cut out 2 pieces of cardboard and attached linen fabric to both sides with fabric glue. The straight pins go in easily, and it holds a total of 24 pair on both sides since it's a "swing frame". This was a very easy project and I'll be looking for more swing frames on my next outing!
